Build – Stage 3

A huge amount of time was spent digitising all the period graphics and computer modelling them onto photos of the car to get the dimensions correct and especially the curvature around the wheel arches. With all the main graphics applied, the car has really jumped to life and is even more striking than we had anticipated! This is the first time that this historically significant 1600 GTA has been back in its DRP Championship winning colours for 39 years!

Build – Stage 2

8 weeks into the build and the assembly is effectively completed, only the engine, gearbox & cooling system to install. With the car on the ground we have been able to simulate final ride height to check damper travel and set droop limit systems.

Build – Stage 1

With a busy and productive first month, the car is starting to come together quickly.

All the original Autodelta suspension members were blasted, crack tested and re powder-coated before being rebushed and installed.

The original Autodelta brake parts were rebuilt and installed with new Alfaholics GTAm/1300 GTA Gp.2 vented rotors.

The original steering box was rebuilt and upgraded with our billet steering box case for safety reasons.

A bespoke race wiring harness was made in the car using lightweight thin wall race wire, bespoke s/s brake lines manufactured in the car, Autodelta fibreglass dashboard installed, lights installed & new bespoke FIA safety fuel cell installed.

Shell Painted – Ready for Assembly

The car has been returned to its original 1974 Stahlberg Medley Bourbon livery when it won the German DRP Championship in the hands of Dieter Meyer. The stripes have been painted on as original, the stars and the rest of the livery will be applied as vinyl once assembly is completed.

Aluminium Body Restoration Completed

Aluminium body work completed and fibreglass arch extensions trial fitted. The fibreglass will need modifying to bring it to Stahlberg specifications which will be done at paint preparation stage. Weld in T45 cage installed.

With all the aluminium panels fitted to the car, the wings are trimmed back and the fibreglass wide arches are pinned on and adjusted for alignment.

Aluminium panels wheeled in correct GTA specification 1mm Peraluman 25 material for both accuracy of detail and minimum weight. Car will first be panelled up as a narrow body car to ensure perfect wing/door alignment. Once completed, the aluminium wings will be trimmed back prior to the fibreglass wide arches being installed – just as per the sequence of events in period.

Chassis Restoration 2

With the car installed on our factory Celette jig, we installed new sills, front floor pans and rear seat pan. Inner engine bays were repaired as well as wheel arch areas which had been damaged in previous accidents and not repaired to a suitable standard.

Once the main structural work had been finished and the seam welding had been completed, the car could be removed from the chassis jig and installed on the rollover jig. On the rollover jig all the tidying work was completed to repair damaged as well as previously badly repaired areas.

With chassis fabrication completed, the chassis was reblasted then primed and painted ready for the aluminium to be restored and installed.

The beating 16v heart of the car, in the exact specification it was upgraded to in 1975 by Dieter Meyer/Stahlberg Racing. This Autodelta engine features a special magnesium cast inlet manifold, guillotine/slide throttles , Spica mechanical fuel injection, a special ultra rare 16v Cosworth developed head, 8 port exhaust manifold, exhaust side water exit rail and and extra deep Autodelta racing magnesium sump set for higher oil capacity.

History

During its first 10 years racing from 1966 to 1976, this car competed in no less than 118 races, winning its class 41 times and scoring 12 outright race victories, making it possibly the most successful 1600 GTA in German national race history. Its most successful year was 1974 when the car was driven by Dieter Meyer for Stahlberg Racing and it won the German Touring Car Championship, known then as the DRP. During its 1974 & 1975 seasons, it was sponsored by Medley Bourbon Whiskey and ran in the unique and eye catching “Stars & Stripes” livery.

This car has competed and won in every specification in which GTAs were ever raced and consequently offers a fascinating insight into the development and progression of the infamous GTA throughout those years. It started its race career in 1966 as a Group 2 1600, was upgraded to fuel injection in 1968, followed by a switch to Group 4 specification in 1970, before being converted to 1300 narrow angle 8v widebody specification for 1974. In 1975 it received its final modifications; namely the newly developed, extremely rare and expensive 16v ‘Piccolo’ head (featuring Spica slide injection, magnesium inlet manifold and special 8 port exhaust manifold) and Alfetta Watts linkage to replace the troublesome sliding block arrangement. The car, as it stands today, in this ultimate specification in which it finished its Stahlberg career in 1976 and is dripping with Autodelta special components! It even still has its original ONS logbook from 1969-1973, which fully documents all the car’s owners, drivers and races entered.

  • 25th February 1966 sold by Alfa Romeo VertriebsgmbH to X, Neuenburg, Germany
  • 4th March 1966, Alfa Romeo VertriebsgmbH lists AR 613834 as part of full factory recall of 1600 GTAs to have magnesium front timing chest replaced with aluminium part. The magnesium front covers had been recalled by Alfa Romeo due to water corrosion.
