We have recently developed this superb electric power steering system which fits into the original steering column and is concealed from view under the dashboard.
The system is speed sensitive (by taking a pulse from the speedo cable) and is therefore able to provide increased assistance at low speeds when parking and manoeuvring. As the road speed increases, the assistance gradually reduces until it reaches a minimal level by 30mph/50kmh, so as to retain the lovely Alfa steering feel. Torque sensors in the steering column continually feed data to the electronic control unit in order to apply the optimum level of assistance, according to the road speed and steering input from the driver. There is also a safeguard built into the system whereby assistance is limited if the road wheel encounters a solid object, such as being parked up against a high kerb, thereby preventing damage to the steering box.
We originally developed this system for the Spider-R V6 project and were so impressed with the results that we have fitted it to several other builds including our new GTA-R 290 project, ensuring it is as comfortable cruising the streets of Monaco as it is competent at lapping the Nordschleife in 8mins!
The conversion is carried out using your core steering box and in conjunction with a full steering box rebuild using our CNC machined billet casing for additional strength. This is particularly important, given the well known cracking issues that affect the original cast aluminium casings. We also require the aluminium column switch mounting shroud in order to complete the conversion. When refitting, a small modification is required to be made to the box section under the dash to clear the motor, so the installation should be carried out by a competent engineer. All brand new internals, not reconditioned, comes complete with new drop arm, bottom nut, key way, spare shims to adjust the box with in the future. Steering column length of 695mm from bottom of shaft to top of thread. Only this length available, for cars requiring a longer shaft length you will not be able to use a factory steering wheel and will need to use our premium billet boss adaptor with aftermarket bolt on steering wheel to ensure the appropriate clearance to the plastic column shroud. Also ideal to use this box as the basis for our electric power steering conversion.

This is mainly due to the original items being manufactured as a casting, resulting in imperfections and therefore weaknesses being introduced into the material. Now that these castings are getting old, the forces exerted on the cases make them very prone to cracking, in some cases leading to complete steering failure. Over 75% of the LHD Burman steering boxes we have been asked to rebuild by customers have had cracked cases and are therefore unserviceable.
As a result of this problem, we have CAD designed and manufactured this superb replacement case, machined from a very high strength aerospace grade aluminium. This quality of material makes the case extremely strong and durable. This case is not only suitable to use when you have a cracked steering box, but is also a very sensible and worthwhile upgrade to install on all fast road, trackday and race cars to avoid the catastrophic failures associated with original case cases.

We have manufactured this item due to the increasingly poor quality of the existing Italian cast item available on the market. We found that on top of bad quality of the casting, the machining tolerances are sub-standard resulting in poor location on the taper shaft and keyway.
