A fabulous new suspension upgrade developed by Alfaholics for owners of 916 series GTV & Spider!

We have spent the last 12 months developing and refining a suspension kit to improve the handling of 3.0 V6 GTVs and Spiders, which suffer as standard from poor body control and excessive understeer, partly due to the heavy V6 engine up front.  We used the Alfaholics GTV as the development car, already upgraded with the superb Koni sport front dampers, and set about evaluating a range of different setups to improve body control during direction changes and on-limit behaviour, without affecting the ride quality and the day to day usability of the car.

After an extensive process, we have recently signed off the final set-up.  It turned out to be just as challenging (and time-consuming!) as the GTV exhaust development, as we worked to achieve an optimum handling balance and feel in both wet and dry conditions.

The result?  In a word.. awesome!  The car is utterly transformed – feeling vastly more capable and accomplished when attacking roundabouts or a series of corners or indeed the race track.  The uprated anti-roll bars have improved turn-in to the point where the steering feels much more responsive and direct, as less of the steering inputs are absorbed and lost through excessive body roll.  Whereas the standard car would rapidly reach its limits and wash into understeer, the modified car tacks into turns positively with higher grip levels, inspiring greater driver confidence and enjoyment.  Such is the improvement, a standard car now feels vague and wallowy by comparison!

We have also tuned the anti-roll bars to provide better throttle adjustability on the limits of grip, making it easier to adjust the line, especially in instances where a corner tightens or there is a surface change.  This is particularly noticeable in the wet where the car feels superbly balanced and can even be made to break into mild and manageable oversteer if provoked.  We have developed the kit with an adjustable rear anti-roll bar, allowing owners to fine-tune on-limit behaviour according to driver preference.

One of the best features of the kit is that there are no unwelcome trade-offs.  As many GTV owners will testify, the ride quality is already stiff enough (especially on UK roads these days!) so we elected not to increase the spring rates – thereby preserving the car’s usability and long distance comfort.

The kit consists of uprated front and rear anti-roll bars finished in premium black powder-coating, special laser cut aluminium mounts, poly bushes and all new nuts and bolts to fit the kit. We have now gone one step further and added and upgraded kit including springs and droplinks at a discounted price.

Alfa Romeo OE torsen type limited slip differential. Can be retrofitted without modification to 3.0 GTV and Spider.

The Q2 is a torque sensing diff that constantly adjusts the torque split between the front wheels so that it is biased towards the wheel with the most grip. When it senses an unloaded wheel start to spin, it transmits torque progressively across the diff to the wheel with greater grip, allowing the driver to accelerate earlier out of a corner and thereby achieve a higher exit speed.

We have recently fitted a Q2 diff to the Alfaholics 3.0 GTV and the result is stunning! Traction under hard acceleration is superb, especially when exiting a wet roundabout or powering out of an off-camber corner where the standard car is prone to understeer. The Q2 allows much more throttle to be applied in a corner and the car responds more positively to steering inputs when on the limit of grip under acceleration. It is also noticeable how much the Q2 reduces torque steer, especially in the wet and when the front tyres are worn. Under hard acceleration with the standard open diff, the steering wheel will often tug in your hands as it tracks imperfections and surface changes in the road. With the Q2, the extra grip at the front wheels is immediately noticeable as the car holds its line and feels much more sure footed. This is a fantastic upgrade! We have developed and manufactured this fantastic new big brake kit for 916 series 3.0 V6 GTV & Spider. As owners will testify, these cars have notoriously poor brakes as standard and they are particularly inadequate given the performance of the V6 engine! This kit replaces the OE set-up with Brembo 330mm grooved and vented sport discs and huge 6 pot calipers. The calipers are machined from aircraft grade billet aluminium and feature stainless steel castellated pistons for durability and minimal heat transfer. The kit comes complete with bespoke aluminium brackets which bolt to the standard upright and stainless steel braided hoses to connect the calipers to the standard brake hoses. This is fully compatible with our 4 line braided hose kit.

We have done extensive road and track testing to perfect this kit and the result is awesome stopping power with excellent pedal feel and sensitivity. We carried out the track testing at Bedford Autodrome GT circuit which is notoriously tough on brakes. Lap after lap it was easy to attack every braking area with great confidence and it was impossible to induce any fade, even during prolonged sessions. The increased level of bite made it possible to brake far later than ever possible with standard brakes.

On the road, the brakes are superbly powerful and effortless, making the car a joy to drive quickly down twisty B roads, with the added security of having awesome stopping ability in the event of an emergency. The improvement over the standard Alfa brakes is extraordinary – this kit has proved to be an amazing upgrade for the Alfaholics 3.0 V6 GTV and has made the car so much more fun to drive quickly!

The kit requires a minimum of 17″ diameter wheels.

In addition to the kit, we can supply either Ferodo DS2500 or DS3000 pads.
