My memories of Giulia saloons go way back to the 1980s when I was taken to school everyday in a red Giulia Super 1600 – a lovely original car that stayed in the family for a number of years. I was later reacquainted with a Giulia saloon during my time at Bristol University when I used a tweaked TI for the University Motor Club’s road rallies. With a 2 litre engine and Alfaholics suspension, it’s cross country pace was fantastic, more than a match for rivals with Golf GTIs and Peugeot 205s and tremendous fun to drive. As a saloon, it was an unlikely performer!
Ever since we built the first Alfaholics GTA Replica in 1998, which I raced for several years, there has been a huge interest in modified coupes – the ultimate incarnation being Max’s super-quick twin spark GTA Replica that has been responsible for embarrassing more than a few Porsches and BMWs at the Nurburgring.
Well, now it’s time for an Alfaholics TI Super Replica – built to a similar spec as Max’s car, including our renowned big valve twin spark engine on 3D mapped ignition and carbs. The good news is that the project has already begun!
With the idea hatched, all we had to do was find a good rust-free car to form the basis of the project – not an easy feat! Thanks to Daron at Vintage Customs in Seattle, the hunt led us to an existing customer in California who had owned a 1967 Giulia TI for some time. It hadn’t been used for a number of years but most importantly it was rust-free and complete with all its stainless steel trim pieces (those bits that are so hard to find nowadays). A deal was struck and the shipping arranged. A few weeks’ wait and finally the time came to pick the car up from Chatham docks. There is undoubtedly a lot of work to do but this will make a superb car. Watch this space for build updates!
