This wishbone kit is the ultimate upgrade to perfect the front suspension geometry of your race 105 series Alfa. It is made from the ultimate strength steel tube known as T45, with chemically matched steel billet for the CNC machined parts. All is fully TIG welded to the very highest quality.
They are essential in order to get the whole car working perfectly. When the ride height of a 105 with standard wishbones is lowered for racing, the wishbones pass the horizontal at static ride height, lowering the front roll centre significantly below the ground. This has several severe adverse effects on the geometry and handling characteristics of the car. The increase in negative camber when the suspension rises becomes negligible, and when added to the roll of the car in the corner it leads to ‘roll on positive camber’ (i,e, the camber reduces in cornering). This causes the outside edge of the tyre to overheat easily leading to understeer and thus, accelerated tyre degradation. Another significant problem of having the rollcentre very low is that roll at the front of the car is increased. This leads to excessive roll in corners and excessive ‘3-wheeling’. A further problem of standard wishbones is that they are symmetrical about the centre line of the top suspension arm. Thus, very little castor is achievable before either the tyre touches the rear of the arch bulkhead, or the top arm touches the chassis leg.
Fitting these tubular front wishbones not only reduces the un-sprung weight of the front suspension, but also vastly improves the geometry. By attaching to the underside of the bottom part of the upright, they lift the front rollcentre back above the ground, thereby increasing roll-on negative camber. As they are asymmetrical the amount of castor available is greatly increased. They also reset the ratio of the front to rear rollcentres when used in conjunction with the Alfaholics Watts Link Kit, this ratio is critical in maintaining high speed stability and driveability. This ratio is maintained at a good height at which traction is optimised without having large roll characteristics. With all the rose joints fully screwed in, the wishbone is the same length as a standard wishbone, rose joints may be screwed out to widen the front track and inner rose joints may be screwed asymmetrically to further increase or decrease available castor.
The Alfaholics Tubular Wishbone Kit is used in conjunction with the Alfaholics Full Race 2 1/4” Small Spring Kit, so those of you who already have this kit need not worry that it becomes obsolete.
The Alfaholics Tubular Wishbone kit comes complete with modified cross pins, premium quality rose-joints (the outers being stainless steel PTFE lined self lubricating items), all bolts to 12.9 spec, aircraft quality K-nuts and Schnorr safety washers. All sleeves and machined parts are included and made from the highest grade EN24T.
The kit is completely reversible, requiring no chassis or upright modifications, so if you ever end up racing your car in a series or a 1-off race where you must use standard wishbones, it is a simple unbolt and replace job.
